The Story Behind Street Therapy

WHO IS DEAN / ICARUS?

Dean Cooper, also known as "Icarus", is a UK-based executive transformation leader, author, speaker, creator and founder of the Street Therapy.

With a professional background in enterprise technology, digital transformation and senior leadership, Dean has spent years helping organisations rebuild systems, modernise operations and navigate high-pressure change at executive level.

But the systems he eventually realised needed rebuilding most were not corporate. They were personal.

Built in Collapse — Not in Comfort

Street Therapy was not built in comfort, balance or stability. It was built in collapse.

Dean was raised largely by his grandparents due to unresolved family difficulties and grew up feeling like the "black sheep" — caught somewhere between worlds. Home life was loving, funny and full of warmth — the kind of house where friends gathered, laughter went on for days and chaos somehow felt comforting.

But underneath it all was another reality quietly running in the background: anxiety, emotional confusion, hyper-awareness, turbulence. Humour used as armour. Social confidence masking deeper insecurity and pain. Like many people, Dean learned very young how to perform being okay.

Two Lives at Once

At the same time, his childhood was filled with beauty, freedom and adventure. Long bike rides through the countryside and into Greater London. Music. Creativity. Exploration. Amazing people. Big personalities and unforgettable memories.

It was almost like living two lives at once — one full of wonder and possibility, the other quietly shaped by pressure, misunderstanding and emotional neglect.

School — Another Battlefield

Diagnosed with dyslexia in the 1980s, Dean struggled in an education system that often treated difference as failure rather than potential. He was publicly humiliated while reading aloud, mocked for struggling academically and repeatedly made to feel as though his future had already been decided for him.

Yet underneath it all was intelligence, emotional depth, pattern recognition and resilience that simply did not fit the systems around him.

Trauma That Followed

Trauma followed him through life in ways that often remained invisible. As a child, Dean found himself exposed to violence, death and situations no child should truly have to process — including being closely connected to the aftermath of a murder case that remained emotionally imprinted on him for years afterward.

Later came further losses, including finding his best friend dead at just 31 years old — an event that profoundly changed the course of his life and emotional landscape.

The Executive Mask

Still, from the outside, life eventually appeared successful. Dean rose into senior executive and transformation roles, travelling internationally, leading complex projects and helping businesses modernise and evolve.

But beneath the professional image, unresolved trauma, neurodivergent masking, pressure, emotional suppression and addiction slowly built over years.

Then Came Fatherhood — The Real One

Not the polished social media version. The real one. Responsibility. Pressure. Financial fear. Exhaustion. Trying to support a family while carrying the weight of the world internally.

Dean and his wife largely faced it alone, without wider support systems or people to regularly step in and help carry the load. Then came the early signs of AuDHD within their son. More worry. More navigating systems. More emotional pressure. More fear of getting things wrong.

Then came the loss of another child during early pregnancy. Then their daughter arrived. Love in his heart. Tears behind his eyes.

Somewhere underneath all of it, Dean broke.

Legacy Before Survival

During the years Dean was burning out, struggling silently with depression, suicidal thoughts, escalating alcohol dependency and worsening health problems, he became increasingly aware of one terrifying thought:

"What if I'm not here one day for my children?"

Long before his eventual collapse and recovery, that fear pushed him to begin writing. In the middle of emotional chaos and survival mode, Dean wrote and self-published seven children's books under his "My Storytime" brand — with several more drafted afterward — as a way of leaving behind something meaningful for his son and daughter in case life or his health eventually took him away from them.

Those books were never about money. They were about legacy, love and survival. A father trying to leave pieces of himself behind for his children while quietly believing he might not survive the road he was on.

The Collapse

An accident left Dean with permanent damage and disability in his left arm and shoulder. At the same time, worsening heart issues, years of chronic stress, emotional suppression and escalating alcohol dependency pushed him toward total physical and emotional collapse.

At one stage he was drinking heavily every day while still functioning professionally, still leading, still smiling and still pretending he was fine.

Then one day his body finally gave up.

As he was rushed to hospital with crushing chest pain and heart complications, his children witnessed the fear unfolding around them.

Holding his children's hands during that moment, Dean made a promise: he would not leave.

That Was the Moment Icarus Was Born

Not the mythology of flying too close to the sun. The mythology of surviving the fall.

Recovery started slowly. Walking. Silence. Reflection. Movement. Calisthenics. Sobriety. Emotional intelligence. Rebuilding identity. Relearning peace. Learning how to sit with himself instead of running from himself.

One foot in front of the other. What started as survival slowly evolved into Street Therapy — a lived-experience framework centred around movement, mindset and self. A practical philosophy designed to help people rebuild after burnout, trauma, addiction, emotional collapse, identity loss and the silent pressures of modern life.

Today

Dean remains active in executive transformation and strategic leadership while also building Street Therapy into a broader movement spanning recovery, philosophy, coaching, education, speaking, media and community impact.

He is the author of The World Is F*cked, But You Don't Have To Be, host of The After The Fall Show podcast, creator of the Broken Man wellbeing brand, creator of From The Ashes — a chilli and BBQ sauce brand themed around resilience, flavour and recovery — and producer of a conceptual nu-metal opera album exploring the fall and rise of Icarus through mythology, addiction, collapse, resilience and hope.

Using both lived experience and systems thinking, Dean has also published independent conceptual papers through OSF (Open Science Framework), exploring behavioural patterns, emotional systems, neurodivergence, recovery and gaps within modern mental health and support models.

Alongside Street Therapy, Dean is developing frameworks focused on SEND inclusion, parent collaboration and accountability within education systems — inspired by both his own experiences growing up and the realities faced by his neurodivergent children.

Dean's work and story have been featured by BBC Spotlight, BBC regional platforms, Cornwall Live and national media, with growing recognition for his grounded, emotionally intelligent and deeply human approach to transformation and recovery.

At the centre of everything he builds is one core belief:

People are often far more overwhelmed, exhausted and misunderstood than the world knows.

But people can rebuild.

Sometimes all it takes is honesty, movement, understanding, purpose, support... and one step forward.
